Civilization: Beyond Earth is a considerably new real-time strategy (RTS) game. Although this is a fine RTS game that offers a lot of fun, there are unfortunately quite a few Civilization: Beyond Earth crashes that we, the gamers, have to deal with. Therefore, you may want to pay attention to the list of fixes available here. Hopefully, they will help solve your problems related to the game. Yet, before we begin, perhaps it is wise for you to make sure that your computer meets the minimum requirements to run the game. Additionally, scanning if your computer has any viruses is a good idea as well because viruses can often trigger numerous issues when you are trying to run an executable file.

Top 10 Fixes for Civilization: Beyond Earth Crashes, Errors, Won’t Start, DLL, 1920×1080, Low FPS, Unlock game, 24Hz, Stuck loading, Stutter Audio

1. Civilization: Beyond Earth won’t start.

  1. Turn off your antivirus and disable your internet connection so as to prevent errors from emerging during installation.
  2. Uninstall the game and visual C redistributable files.
  3. Clean your Windows registry. Note: it is recommended that you use third party registry cleaner. If you try to clean your Windows registry manually and do something wrong, your system may completely fail to start.
  4. Restart your computer.
  5. Reinstall the game.
  6. Turn on your antivirus, connect to the internet and update the drivers for your video graphics adapter (VGA) card as well as your sound card.

2. Civilization: Beyond Earth crashes with DLL error message while opening

Reinstall or update the DirectX version running on your computer. Alternatively, you can do the steps mentioned below:

  1. Search for the DLL file specified
  2. Copy and paste the file in question into the game installation directory on your computer.

3. Full HD resolution (1920 x 1080) unavailable.

  1. Go to the Options menu.
  2. Uncheck fullscreen option and apply the change.
  3. You can now choose the full HD (1920 x 1080) resolution and a refresh rate of 60 Hz.
  4. Revert to fullscreen mode.
  5. Note: You have to do this whenever you want to start the game.

4. Civilization: Beyond Earth crashes. Low frame rates per second.

Update your graphics card driver. For an alternative, you can try changing the values in the INI configuration file of the game:

  1. Locate the config.ini file that corresponds to the game. It’s usually stored in “Documents/My Games/Civilization: Beyond Earth”.
  2. Right-click on the config.ini file and choose to open it with Notepad.
  3. Find ‘EnableGameCoreThreading’ and change the value from 1 to 0. It should result in ‘EnableGameCoreThreading = 0’ (without quotes).
  4. Save the file.
  5. Right-click on it, choose properties and tick the box for the ‘read-only’ option.

5. Civilization: Beyond Earth map is blurry.

Disable the Depth of Field feature of the game:

  1. Go to “Documents/My Games/Civilization: Beyond Earth”.
  2. Right-click on the GraphicsSettings.ini file and open it with Notepad.
  3. Change ‘EnableDoF = 1’ to ‘EnableDoF = 0’.
  4. Save the file and change the properties to read-only.

6. Game won’t unlock.

By October 24, 2014, the game should have become fully playable. However, for those with encrypted preload version of the game on Steam, it takes some time for Steam to completely decrypt the game files and then to copy them to the proper locations.

7. Resolution gets stuck at the refresh rate of 24 Hz.

Here’s the solution (works only with AMD Mantle):

  1. Browse “Documents/My Games/Civilization: Beyond Earth”.
  2. Open the GraphicsSettings.ini file with Notepad.
  3. Change the values of resolution (WindowResX and WindowResY) and refresh rate to the desired values.

8. Game has stuttering audio/video.

Update the drivers of your graphics and sound cards to the latest version.

9. Game gets stuck on loading screen.

Reinstall and rerun the Visual C redistributable files.

10. Civilization: Beyond Earth crashes while trying to skip the intro video.

Press Alt+F4 and choose ‘No’ when prompted if you want to quit the game.

There are plenty of gamers that confirm the Civilization: Beyond Earth works just fine for them. However, considering the diverse range of PC configurations available out there, developers may often have a hard time trying to polish their games to make sure they run smoothly across most, if not all, configurations. So, if the list above does not incorporate your issues related to the game, you are welcome to let us know about your issue using the comment box below and we’ll try to help you as much as we can.

how do i rerun visiual c files?

    • Frazier

I have the same problem, did you figure out a way to rerun the files?

    • JonasKlose

Simply install the latest visual c runtimes from the Microsoft Download Center. Here’s a list. Choose those you like:
      (Civ needs the 2008 ones)

If your install is ok, you should find a copy at {Install Dir}VCRedist.

  • Resolution fix does not work. if u klick back at “fullscreen” it just delete all “good” resolutions. well done 2k

    • Seia

      Same problem for me…

  • Kevin

The blur fix is not working for me.

  • Impossible to play on full-screen with a 2560×1440 resolution.

    Too bad …

  • Rippa

Yeah none of these cover mine. The exe file is fine as it starts and runs. but by a certain amount of time doesnt matter if im watching the loading video or started a game it freezes screen and then crashes. This also happens with my civ 5. a full re downaload and install doesnt fix it.

  • Erik

My problem is similar to Rippa. I couldn’t start a new game without it freezing at the load and then restarting my whole computer. I got past this issue when I don’t play in fullscreen but it eventually crashes once again restarting my whole comp. Is this even a Civ: Beyond Earth problem or maybe a computer problem?

  • theluminater

Erik, Rippa, I’m having the same issue. I am able to get a game going but maybe 10 minutes later, and consistently after 10-15 turns, it freezes and crashes. I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled, changed my settings and nothing works. At this point i’m thinking its gonna be a patch fix, just hope they fix it soon cuz this blows!

  • Andrew

I have an issue with Beyond Earth: I want to run it with mantle mode, but when it wants to load the main menu the game exits and changes my computers resolution.
I Have the latest driver. My config: R9 280x videocard, 8350 amd processor.
    I hope you can help.
    Best Wishes.

    • Hx

Same for me, double click on CivilizationBE_DX11.exe and it says that that same file is missing. Maybe because I’m on Windows 10?

  • Electron

I’ve tried the first step, and same on another guide aswell. But i still get civilizationbe_dx11.exe application error The application was unable to start correctly (0xc000007b).It won’t even start. Did exactly as you said. Still getting the message.

    • Tgreg

  • Marshall

I have played civilization for a long time. I use my mouse to do my moves. When I click on next turn, nothing happens…what am I doing wrong?

  • Zimanko1988

Well, I have the same problem as Marshall. Im in my 378-380th turn, and when I click on next turn, nothing happens. Can anybody help us?

    • Marshall

Zimanko, I sent an e-mail to earlier today. I asked basically the same question…and sent them the properties of my PC for them to make sure that that is not the problem…which I know that it is not. I will let you know if I hear anything back from them. Please let me know if you find out anything. Thanks! At least you were able to play the game for a while…I could do everything for my first move, but was unable to proceed to the second turn.

    • bamm

Hey i found this somwhere else:

I’m posting this in many “next turn problem” threads, apologies if it’s spamming:

I had issues getting the “next turn” button to appear too. This was similar to an issue I had with Civ V, so I applied the same fix:

Can’t select units or end turn •
Information If you have a delay in units responding, or the end turn button does not work, try the following:
      Fix Disable EnableGameCoreThreading
Open config.ini in the configuration files location.
      Set EnableGameCoreThreading to 0.

Worked like a charm for me – here’s a link to the Civ 5 support wiki:

  • Marshall

Thanks! I guess I am no as computer savi as you. Where is the “configuration files location”? I looked in the steam file location and could not find anything. I never had a problem like this with civilation 5.

    • Marshall

bamm…I finally figured it out…and it worked! I do not understand the game at all…but I will catch on to it! Thank you!

  • simo

I’m getting an issue not listed here. When I run the game, it lags on the intro logos all the way to the menu. Everytime I run the game, I have to change something on the videos settings, hit apply and that fixes it. Anyway to make this permanent? it’s quite annoying.

    • robes

While it won’t fix the issue I imagine, you can make the game skip the intro vids by renaming the files under the CivBE directory at least – you want to change CivBE_Logos.bk2 and BE_Intromovie.bk2. Should speed up getting to the menu at least :]

  • Meamoi

Beyond Earth isn’t a Real Time Strategy. It’s a Turn Based Strategy.

  • Stereorage

You are calling it an RTS: Real Time Strategy game. It is not an RTS. It is a TBS: Turn Based Strategy.

  • Marshall

I have a new question. I have been playing this game for months now. I have a new problem. The Covert Ops screen is blank and I cannot change any covert ops. This just started tonight…I played it earlier today without problems. I have exited the game and restarted my PC without success. Does anyone know what to do?

  • Macak01

I have a serious problem with the game and I hope that someone knows how to fix it..
I don’t have any problems with the intro or with the resolution but my computer just automatically crashes after random of turns.. I can’t tell u if that’s happening after 50 or 100 or 150 turns but without any warning my whole computer is down..
I’ve tried to download and re-install another BTE and every time this problem occurs..
    any suggestions??
