The Noob Guide: How to Check if your PC can run Watch Dogs

There seem to be a multitude of posts all over the web, asking the question: “Do you think my PC can run Watch Dogs?” Really, it’s a simple process, but for the benefit of our readers unfamiliar with the innards of their beloved PC systems we present to you The Noob Guide: How to Check if your PC can run Watch Dogs.

First things first – What does it take to run Watch Dogs on the PC?

Mr_Shade, the Ubisoft UK Forum Manager posted on the Ubisoft forums that these are the official minimum specs you need to play Watch Dogs. Take note:

  • Operating System: Windows Vista SP2 64bit, Windows 7 SP1 64bit, Windows 8 64bit
  • Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad Q8400 @ 2.66Ghz or AMD Phenom II X4 940 @ 3.0Ghz
  • RAM: 6GB
  • Video card: 1024 VRAM DirectX 11 with Shader Model 5.0 (see supported list)
  • DirectX: DirectX June 2010 Redistributable
  • Disk Space: 20 Gb
  • Sound: DirectX 9 compatible Sound Card
  • Peripherals: Windows-compatible keyboard and mouse required, optional controller
  • Note: This product supports 64-bit operating systems ONLY

How about Laptops?

In addition, Mr_Shade says that “Laptops – though not officially supported – may work, however performance may suffer due to differences – so please make sure drivers etc are up to date and you meet [the above] requirements. Any changes from these requirements in your hardware – lower than minimum requirements – may result in the game not working, so please use these requirements as a guide.”

Having said all that, how do I check if my system can run Watch Dogs?

Mr_Shade recommends Nvidia’s graphics card testing page, which will test your GPU against the requirements. You can check it out here.

I don’t want any third party applications checking my computer. What do you suggest?

Now, if you’re too fearful of malware attacks by installing Java applications to check your hardware (it happens!), we’ll teach you a little trick. Follow these very simple steps:

  1. Press WinKey + R
  2. Type dxdiag
  3. Press enter

You should see a window like this come up:

dxdiag

Beautiful, right? Now, we highlighted the really important components of your PC which will tell you if you can run the game or not. If you counter check this with the minimum required specifications posted earlier, you will immediately know that this PC System will struggle with Watch Dogs because of the subpar RAM (6GB required) and CPU power (2.66 GHz required). Sure, you can still try installing it — but please don’t complain if it lags, freezes, stutters, or crashes.

Congratulations! You’re less of a noob now.

Go tell your friends, family, loved ones that Winkey + R dxdiag is the best thing ever. But seriously, please try to manage your expectations since Watch Dogs is a very demanding game. Here are some closing words from Mr_Shade:

If you post asking for advice from the community about your system – please remember – no one has any real idea of how the game will react to lower than required hardware – so any guesses are just that, same goes for people asking for frame rate quotes – these can vary greatly due to drivers etc and if you purchase the game and do not manage to get that performance, no one is to blame.
