How To Fix Prey 2017 Crashes, Errors Freezing, Performance Issues, Lagging, Stuck Loading, D3D11

Prey is one of the most anticipated games this to be released in the first half of 2017, which is published by Bethesda who had much success with the very recent Dishonored 2. However, while the developers promised smoother gameplay compared to their recent releases, Prey is bugged with crashes, errors, freezing, lag, and performance issues. To help the community we’ve listed here the best working fixes we’ve tried.

1. How to Fix Random Crashing in Prey 2017

Here are some fast fixes that worked for us:

  1. Try setting your virtual memory fixed to just more than the recommended value. (system settings >advanced system settings > paging file size to custom size).
  2. Verify your Steam game cache
  3. The crashing might be due to a corrupt save file. Try loading and playing from an automatic save from the start of a mission.
  4. Turn anti-aliasing off in your graphics settings. While you’re at it, turn the level of detail down a notch or two.

2. Prey 2017 Constantly Freezing While In-game

If you’re getting freezes in particular, here’s what got us going:

  1. Update your graphics drivers to the latest version
  2. Inversely, try rolling them back as well to an older version
  3. Disable triple buffering
  4. Turn off V-sync
  5. Cap the FPS at 120
  6. Set the game to windowed borderless mode

3. How to Fix Stuttering and Lagging

What worked for us to fix CPU performance issues in Prey 2017 was simple: Go to the Task Manager, find Prey.exe and set its CPU priority from normal to high. This reduced CPU consumption by around 50%.

Another fix that works is to turn V-Sync ‘On’ while in-game, then exit the game, add the following in the file “C:Users{YOUR_USERNAME}Saved GamesArkane StudiosPreygame.cfg”

d3d10_TripleBuffering = 1
d3d11_TripleBuffering = 1
d3d9_TripleBuffering = 1

4. Prey 2017 is Stuck Loading

If you’re using RTSS and Crimson to cap frame rates, those are the culprits. Unlock your frame rate and you’ll immediately see quick load times. Then simply use in-game FPS capping.

5. Updating FOV via Config File

  1. To enable FOV, edit the game.cfg file in notepad. The file is located in the root Prey folder in your Save Games folder (likely c:users\Saved GamesArkane StudiosPrey )
    Look for cl_hfov = 85.5656
  2. 85 is the default horizontal FOV setting, but it can be replaced with values up to 120. (Note – some of the issues we are working on are more noticeable with higher FOV.)

6. Cannot install Prey 2006 at the same time

You might have a problem if you have the original version installed, as the reboot version of Prey uses the same file directory name. Simply change your install path for Prey 2017 and you should be set.

7. Windows 7 Error – D3D11 Create Device and Swap Chain Failed

This is an error from back in Dishonored 2, and it seems some people on Windows 7 are still getting it. Fortunately, the fix is quite simple. Simply install this Microsoft update: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=36805

8. Can’t Install Prey 2017 – Missing file privileges

If you’re getting such an error, the only way is to move your installation folder:

  1. Exit the Steam client application.
  2. Browse to the Steam installation folder for the Steam installation you would like to move (C:Program FilesSteam by default).
  3. Delete all of the files and folders except the SteamApps & Userdata folders and Steam.exe
  4. Cut and paste the whole Steam folder to the new location, for example: D:GamesSteam
  5. Launch Steam and log into your account.
  6. Steam will briefly update and then you will be logged into your account. For installed games, verify your game cache files and you will be ready to play. All future game content will be downloaded to the new folder (D:GamesSteamSteamApps in this example)

9. Mouse Fix

There’s a glitch in Prey 2017 where your mouse cursor won’t disappear and gets in the way of the whole experience. To fix this, change your resolution while playing. Your mouse cursor will the be hidden.

10. Audio Fix

In relation to #9, changing in-game graphics settings may result in missing audio and no sound. To fix this, simply hit Alt+Tab twice and your audio should be back in no time.

  10. If PC is overclocked in any way, try turning it down a little bit or back to stock to ensure no possible issues.

Steam error 2 seems to be happening to some people who’ve had the Windows 10 Anniversary Update. Not everyone, though. It appears to affect all games, from what I can tell.
