Crusader Kings II: Charlemagne seems to have a plenty of problems and bugs lately, even the official forum is not accessible by users. Before we start with the fixes, I want you to make sure your PC meet the minimum requirements of the game. We can’t fix your PC to run something it’s not capable of. Your PC may also contain viruses, so please check it out too.
Top 10 Fixes for Crusader Kings II Crashes, Errors, Charlemagne DLC, Religion Tab, Blank event, Load save, Patch 2.2, Can’t move army, Army crash
1. Crusader Kings II won’t start
Please go to C: Program Files (86)Steamsteamappscommoncrusader kings iiDX then run dxsetup.exe.
If that doesn’t work for you, download “Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 SP1 Redistributable Package” with this link: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=8328
2. Game crashes after new DLC
Please make sure you don’t have any mods installed. A new DLC may cause older mods to become incompatible with the game.
If you disabled all mods and it still crashes, then try this: Go to “Properties” then “Set Launch Options”, and click “Add Option”. Add in “-threads=1”. This one should fix the crashes.
3. Game crashes at startup or when clicking religion tab
There are several reasons to this. I have listed three ways to fix some of the crashes. Try all of them before looking for more fixes.
- Try to go to the folder “steamappscommoncrusader kings ii” and run and install “vcredist.exe”. Just a tips, to remove the annoying steam dialogue you see every time you start the game, rename “Installscript.vdf” to “Installscript.vdf.bak”.
- Try to lower the screen display of the game. Normally, it’s 1920 x 1080. That’s a bit high for people with smaller screens.
- Install the demo of the game first. Then copy “settings.txt” fromt he demo folder to “documentsparadox interactivecrusader kings” ii. Steam may have messed the documents around on the install process.
- Your firewall may have not registered Crusader Kings II as a trusted application. If so, please disable your firewall.
4. Crash when gathering units (Linux)
This happens mostly to linux users. Actually you can solve using the same method we solve “Game crashes after new DLC”. Simply go to “Properties”, “Set Launch Options” and “Add Option”, and add in “-threads=1”.
5. Blank Event Windows
Here again, if you have any mods, please disable them. Every time the game gets a new patch, the mods may lose its compatibility with the game.
6. Can’t move armies (Mac)
If you are are using Mac and have just downloaded the Charlemagne DLC, then you can have this problem. Currently this problem isn’t fixed, you just need to change to windowed mode and wait for a new patch to come.
7. Not getting achievements
Make sure you really have completed the requirements to get an achievements. If you have done, and still aren’t getting achievements then your game may be outdated. Update your game and the achievements should work.
8. No DLC
Someone have bought all the DLCs but none of them are available in the game. The Steam still says you have the the packs though. Try to do a “clean” re-install. First, backup all your save files and delete all files associated with the game in the steam folder. Finally, re-install the game on Steam.
9. Can’t load saves
Right click the game in your Steam Library and click “Properties”, and go to “BETAS”, and then choose 2.1.6. Try loading your saved game now.
10. Any problems with the new patch
There seems to be many problems with the new 2.2 patch of Crusader King II. If you are one of the victims, or not happy with the current patch, it’s possible to revert back to 2.1.6. In Steam Library right click the game and click “Properties”, and click “BETAS” then select “2.1.6” in the dropdown list. Note that if you have any DLCs that are released after 2.1.6, then you have to disable them first in the CK2 launcher, or the game will crash.
Once again, Crusader Kings II seems to have some problems recently, and some people can’t access its forum. This is why we have made this list, hoping to help some of the poor players out there. Please remember that is many cases, bugs are caused by incompatibility with your computer. If so, you may not be able to play this game normally until you get a new computer.
