Sid Meier’s Civilization 6 has been widely received positively by critics and fans alike for how it has executed a refreshed yet familiar sequel through excellent gameplay design, graphics, and musical scoring. However, the Civ 6 isn’t without any bugs, as hundreds of users have reported crashing, freezing, and black screens. Read on for the best fixes we’ve got.

Civ 6 Crashes when Loading

  1. Turn off windows defender
  2. Settings > Update & Security > Windows Defender > Exclusions (add steam common folder to this)
  3. Run Steam as admin

It might be a bugged spy causing the problem. Check your espionage menu and see if any of your spies are “stuck”. A sign of a stuck spy is one in “Awaiting” status in some magical place called “$CityName$”. Once you delete him the crashing on city capture stops.

Civ 6 startup error fixes

  1. Verifying Game Cache
    • Load Steam
    • From the Library section, right-click on the game and select “Properties” from the menu.
    • Select the “Local files” tab and click the “Verify integrity of game cache” button.
    • Steam will match the local files to the cloud files, and fix any errors it encounters.
  2. Reinstalling DirectX
    • In the Steam installation folder of the game you’re having trouble with, there will be typically be a DirectX setup package.
    • Example file path: C:Program Files (x86)SteamsteamappscommonSid Meiers Civilization VI_CommonRedistDirectXJun2010
    • Find and run DXSETUP.exe
    • Reboot the computer (mandatory)
  3. Reinstalling Vcredist
    • Navigate to your game’s Steam folder – there will typically be a Vcredist folder.
    • Example file path: C:Program Files (x86)SteamsteamappscommonSid Meiers Civilization VIvcredist_CommonRedist2012
    • Find and Run vcredist_x86.exe and vcredist_x64.exe
    • Should the files already be installed, you will be prompted to either ‘uninstall’ or ‘repair’. Choose ‘*repair*’.
    • Reboot the computer (mandatory)
    • Afterward, do the same for those located in the 2015 folder. Ex: : C:Program Files (x86)SteamsteamappscommonSid Meiers Civilization VIvcredist_CommonRedist2015

Error joining multiplayer session fix

  1. Start other game, I used CS:GO but any multiplayer capable game should work.
  2. Start Civ 6. So now, both games are running.
  3. Now you will be able to join lobby and play multiplayer.
  4. Close the other game.

  1. Deactivate Windows Update
