The Cave Launch Crash, Save Game Fixes, Objects stuck, FPS fix, Failed to start, Controllers, Cave.exe APPCRASH

The Cave is a new adventure game from Monkey Island and Maniac Mansion creator Ron Gilbert, and Double Fine Productions, the award-winning studio behind Psychonauts and Brütal Legend. The game is certainly adventure-packed and the Crash Wiki team certainly appreciates the amount of detail put into this game. There are some crashes, errors, and bugs you might encounter though, so we’ve compiled a list of fixes you can try out. Good luck!

The Cave Launch Crash, Save Game Fixes, Objects stuck, FPS fix, Failed to start, Controllers, Cave.exe APPCRASH

Can’t load save game in The Cave

If you get the error where you try to load your previous game by selecting the “Continue Game” option and the game brings you back to the main menu, try this:

  1. Go to C:UsersYOUR USER NAMEAppDataRoamingDoublefine
  2. There should be folder with numbers like: 845615615654
  3. Copy all files from that folder(auto, prefs, unlocks) to main folder: C:UsersYOUR USER NAMEAppDataRoamingDoublefine and overwrite all files.

Another solution is to backup your prefs.sav file in the save folder, then remove it from the folder and launch the game and see if that works to fix it.

The Cave characters and objects get stuck

Simply restart the game to fix this glitch.

Cannot select characters

Just pick the character with your mouse, then press esc and choose drop out. This should leave you with the controller controlling all 3 characters.

How to remove the 30 FPS cap

According to the developers, the core renderer is (currently) capped at 30 Hz. They will remove that cap in a future update.

You can also try this workaround posted by HenryGuy:

When you go to Settings -> Display you will notice the Resolution on top.

Notice how it says in brackets (##hz)

HZ is your monitors refresh rate, it will automatically detect the allowed refresh rates. When you click your resolution it will cycle through the available refresh rates BEFORE switching resolutions.

Simply change it to your monitors max, 60hz, or in my case, 120hz, and leave vsync on. This will allow the game to function up to x HZ.

If your vsync is set really low then the game while rendering will dip 4-5fps, sometimes more depending on the system, regardless of how amazing your pc is. Its near impossible to make a game render perfectly on each machine so dips below vsync are expected. For some reason this is especially true when the restrictions are far below the operating capacity of your PC.

Once you have updated your display settings, the game will play much smoother now. I’m glad I always go to settings and change everything to max before I play a game otherwise I might have been thoroughly frustrated like some customers.

Double fine should incorporate a check that searches for the highest HZ on PC only. Their solution is perfect for every other platform.

If this doesn’t help make the game play smoother, disable the steam overlay.

The Cave Error – Failed to start game (unknown error)

How to set controllers other than Xbox 360 controllers

Try launch bigpicture, bind your controller buttons in options, and then launch the game trough bigpicture. Worked for me, and I’m using a really uncommon gamepad (gamecube controller with magicjoybox gcn to usb adapter).

If that doesn’t work, download x360ce and put the exe and .dll in steamapps/common/thecave

Stuck at Time Traveler level in The Cave

There is a rock that is covering a hole and you need to push it away from the hole in the dino age. Hold the interaction button and switch characters to do this.

The Cave on Mac crashes when saving

Update: A patch update was released to fix this. Let us know in the comments if you’re still getting this problem.

The Cave transfer cloud saves from OSX to Windows

You can fix it by grabbing the savegames from OSX and copying the entire folder to the savegame folder in Windows.

The directories are something like: OSX: User/Library/Application Support/Doublefine/TheCave/ ###### (bunch of numbers)

Grab the entire number-folder and paste it to the following directory in Windows: UsersYOURUSERNAMEAppDataRoamingDoublefineTheCave or something.

You should be able to find it.

Cave.exe APPCRASH on launch

Update: This has been resolved by a recent patch. Let us know in the comments if you still get crashes.

The Cave Black screen and out of range message

  1. Go to %APPDATA%DoublefineTheCave
  2. Create an empty text file called screen.dat if it does not exist.
  3. Open screen.dat in the text editor of you choice.
  4. The format of the file should look like the following, but change the details to meet the capabilities of your display.

fullscreen = true
width = 1920
height = 1080
refreshrate = 60
vsync = false

The Cave not in game library

If you can’t find The Cave in your game library, try looking under ‘C’ instead of ‘T’.

Strike Suit Zero Crashes, Errors, Poor FPS, Joystick issues, Adjust FOV, White screen, Cannot start

Hailed by IGN as “balanced between simulation and arcade shooter, creating an excellent combat experience,” Strike Suit Zero or SSZ is one of the latest indie games to sweep the market. It’s a graphical eye candy that is reminiscent of the Gundam franchise. We love the game, but it sure is plagued with crashes, errors, and some control glitches. The developers are working hard to continue rolling patches to address these issues, but until then, we’ve compiled a guide to help you get through.

Strike Suit Zero Crashes, Errors, Poor FPS, Joystick issues, Adjust FOV, White screen, Cannot start

Poor FPS in Strike Suit Zero

Two quick solutions:

  • Turn off v-sync
  • Turn on nVidia adaptive v-sync

A little background from the developers on why there is this issue:

We chose, perhaps unwisely, to clamp the frame rate at “roughly” 60fps. SSZ is built with consoles in mind, and hence built to run at a constant 60fps on those machines. It is possible we’ll lift this restriction at some point in the near future, you’ll find your card will achieve a significantly better framerate than that!

Joystick remapping issues in Strike Suit Zero

If you are getting bugs in remapping joystick controls while using your keyboard in Strike Suit Zero, make sure your options are set to ‘joystick + keyboard’

How to change the language in Strike Suit Zero

You can change the language by following these steps:

  1. Go to your game library in steam.
  2. Right click on strike suit zero.
  3. Select properties.
  4. Select Language tab.
  5. From there you’ll see a dropdown list where you’ll be able to select another language.

If this does not work or is not available, try a Steam override:

Right click the game in steam, select properties and press the ‘launch option’ button and type in one of the following:

  • forcelang=spanish
  • forcelang=french
  • forcelang=italian
  • forcelang=german

This should override the steam setting of English.

Crashing in Mission 2, Mission 4 and Mission 12

We are working on finding a fix for this. Hoopefully a patch will be released soon.

FOV locked at 45

Enable Multiple monitor mode. Use the arrow keys to resize the Menu panel. Press Enter to accept. FOV should now be unlocked.

Dual screen or multiple monitor not working in Strike Suit Zero

If you get a compressed display, use the arrow keys after you enable multimonitor mode to expand the GUI.

Here are additional inputs from the developers:

In order to run the game in more than one monitor you need to have the following requirements:

Before going ingame:

  1. A card that supports NVIDIA Surround or Ati Eyefinity
  2. Enable that surround/eyefinity option in your graphics driver.

  1. Set the resolution to the maximum resolution your graphics card can handle so it spans across all your screens.
  2. Enable multimonitor mode.

Now, when you enable the multimonitor mode in the graphic options menu, you will be able to readjust the size of the whole front end to fit your screen. If you have only 2 monitors maybe it’s a good idea to scale it up to so it fills both screens. If you have 3 or more monitors, it’s better to scale the front end to fit just the central monitor.

Strike Suit Zero Error: 0xc000007b

Simply update your DirectX drivers to resolve this issue.

Strike Suit Zero black screen crash / white screen crash

Update: This seems to have been resolved by a recent patch rolled out. Make sure your game is up to date. Otherwise, let us know in the comments if this problem persists.

Cannot start Strike Suit Zero

Check that the game is using your GPU and not the mainboard chipset. Switching this in Nvidia COntrol Center fixed it will let you play the game.

Control issues – jerkiness and overcompensating

If you’re having a lot of trouble targeting and controlling your ship, try lowering the sensitivity on your strike mode using the game options.
Can I play Strike Suit Zero?

Check if you meet the minimum requirements for SSZ:

  • OS:Windows Vista
  • Processor:Dual core 2.4Ghz
  • Memory:4 GB RAM
  • Graphics:NVIDEO 250 GTS / ATI Radeon 4800 series
  • DirectX®:11
  • Hard Drive:3 GB HD space
  • Sound:Any stereo sound card

Fixing Euro Truck Simulator 2 Crashes, Poor FPS, Lag, Controller Issues, Runtime Errors

Who would have thought that Euro Truck Simulator 2 will be on Steam’s Top Seller’s charts? PC Gamer gave it an 85 out of 100 score, citing it as “one of the PC’s finest and freshest driving games.” Our Crash Wiki team has to agree with the critic scores: it is one beautiful and engrossing games, albeit unexpected. Euro Truck Simulator 2 does suffer from performance issues and crashes though as it has a very demanding game engine. Read on to find a fix!

Euro Truck Simulator 2 Heavy Lagging

This is due to the city loading. Your HDD is probably slow. Reinstall your game on an SSD or 7200RPM drive.

Controller not found error in Euro Truck 2012

You need to select it using the drop down menu in the Controls option screen.

Euro Truck Simulator 2 Crashes and Restarts PC

If the primary symptom is a graphics hang followed by a PC restart, overheating would be likely suspect as the game is GPU heavy.

Here possible fixes:

  1. Make sure you have enough cooling in your PC.
  2. Try setting Maximum pre-rendered frames to 1 in your Nvida Control Panel (Right-click on your desktop > Nvidia Control Panel > Manage 3d Settings> Global Settings).
  3. Also, make sure your monitor runs at a 60 hertz refresh rate during normal operation (Right-click on your desktop > Screen resolution > Advanced > Monitor Tab).

Euro Truck Simulator 2 Runtime error, Crashing after the first delivery

Fixed after a patch by the developers. The problem was caused by misconfiguration in the system delivering the ingame news. It should be fixed now.

Bad Textures, Texture Breaks, Texture Glitch on gaming laptop

This is only for gaming laptops, but could work for some PCs. Note that this is an advanced solution, and only try this if other basic solutions such as disabling anti-aliasing and filtering failed for you. If your BIOS has the option, disable ‘Switchable Graphics’. This will remove your laptop PC’s ability to automatically switch between the onboard intel graphics card and the nVidia / ATI graphics chip, thus smoothening out gameplay.

Game Freeze Fix – Game Freezes during the Intro Video

If you’re using Steam, a quick solution is to verify the integrity of your Steam game cache to resolve the problem. If it persists, ensure that both your graphics drivers and DirectX are updated. Doing both will mostly reduce the occurrences of Euro Truck Simulator 2 freezing.

Game crashes when launching / upon launch

This is a typical DirectX problem. Just update to the latest DirectX version and voila. If that doesn’t work, reinstall DirectX completely.

DirectX Fix – Cannot Install Direct X / Stuck at Direct X Installation

More often than not, this has been caused by other software drivers such as those from Logitech, Razer, Microsoft, etc, which normally control other minor peripherals such as your webcam, special programs, and sometimes your mouse. Simply shut them off and disable them, and try updating/installing Direct X again.

Can I run Euro Truck Simulator 2?

Here are the minimum requirements of Euro Truck Simulator 2:

  • OS:Windows XP
  • Processor:Dual core CPU 2.4 GHz
  • Memory:2 GB RAM
  • Graphics:GeForce 7600 GT-class equivalent
  • DirectX®:9.0c
  • Hard Drive:2 GB HD space
  • Sound:Direct-X compatible

Kotaku: Sony And Microsoft Should Be Worried About The Steam Box. Very Worried.

Steam’s “Piston”

Kotaku writes:

If Valve can sell that convenience along with the power and potential of a true living room PC experience, they won’t be selling a PC at all. They’ll be selling something that will be strolling right into the console battlefield and laying some of the sneakiest sucker-punches this business has ever seen.

TheKoalition: 13 Games To Watch Out For in 2013

13 in 2013: Dragon Age 3

Richard Bailey of writes:

As the 2012 gaming season draws to a close, both consumers and analysts alike have already begun salivating over what possibilities lie ahead in 2013. While new consoles are poised to usher in the next generation of gaming experiences, the current cycle of platforms are also expected to go out strong with a wide variety of blockbuster titles. Both of these dynamics present an interesting problem in the sense that there are still plenty of titles being developed that we don’t know anything about yet. In this article, I will give my own personal thoughts on 13 games that I feel will be revealed at some point and time in 2013.

The 13 in 2013:

  1. Modern Warfare 4
  2. Dragon Age III
  3. Hotline Miami 2
  4. Saints Row 4
  5. Two Worlds III
  6. Dead Rising 3
  7. Alan Wake 2
  8. The Walking Dead Season 2
  9. Halo 5
  10. Killzone 4
  11. Infamous 3 / Vita
  12. Super Smash Brothers U
  13. Uncharted 4

PS3 consoles shipped surpass Xbox 360 – IDC report

PS3 vs. Xbox

The IDC report highlights that just this past December, Sony’s PS3 managed to surpass the number of Xbox 360s shipped worldwide (about 77 million vs. 76 million), despite the PS3 launching a year later. While many hardcore gamers are now waiting for the next-generation systens from Sony and Microsoft, IDC noted that Nintendo will still “find an audience” with Wii U, reaching global bundle shipments of 50 million by year-end 2016.
